Critical mass? There is a whole bunch of foreign workers cycling to work here in Geylang area, unfortunately its mainly confined to this area here. Now with HDB's policy of allowing sublet, hopefully more of these people will populate more roads with commuter cyclist islandwide.

bikepunk,

I'm game, but I might not be in Singapore in late '09. How do you plan to publicise it? (I've tried on sites like Togoparts, but the reaction was... less than enthusiastic.)

what say we put together a critical mass event for '09? it can even be late '09, which gives us more or less a year to plan. it is definitely do-able. we shouldn't care if people don't think we're "ready" for it? were singaporeans ready for the advent of the ERP?
or the increase in GST? lets just go for it, who's with me?
bottom line is, i think it's applaudable to be writing in a blog about changes in LTA policy and whatnot, but we really wouldn't know how much we'd achieve if we didn't try. fixies, singlespeeders, roadies, cruisers, mountainbikers, bmxers, we're all the same. unicyclists, twowheelers,

Ha ha,

Well, I don't have an army either, but I will I ride with you, if I'm in town that is, which unfortunately I don't think will be a very common thing in future.

Questions!
1. What are you riding here in Singapore?
2. What's your story? You seem awfully in tune with society and culture here, from the things you write about.

Michael,

I've tried to suggest Critical Mass before to some cycling activists here, but they thought that Singapore was not 'culturally ready' for it. People on Togoparts also laughed it off. So, I don't have enough of a willing social network to amass the numbers for it, I think. If you know people who would want to participate, do let me know!

Hello there,

Bike addict studying in Boston. Rock on for choosing lugged steel road. I don't understand bicycles here in Singapore. Potential for critical mass in Singapore do you think?

Cheers,

Hey,

I read with great interest your thoughts and experience with cycling in Singapore (I was supposed to wake early for a ride from LH but am now 3+ hrs past bed-time). :)

I drive but occasionally cycle the stretch between Simei to Alexendra to work. I am seriously considering cycling more often though - raising fuel cost, exorbitant cost of car ownership and building a substantial endurance base are compelling reasons.

You are right saying that the cycling culture is just not built into Singapore (yet?). Your many posts eloquently put a finger to the frustrations I've had while communting on my bicycle - great stuff!

I have been considering a fixie for 3 months now and may just take the plunge soon!

Take care, ride safe and keep your blog-post coming.
